Networked computers can also provide a communication medium for network users. Mainframes and minicomputers provided a centralized computing model in which all resources are supplied by the mainframe or minicomputer and accessed by users accessing the computer using dumb terminals. The IBM PC, launched in August of 1981, began the PC revolution. It became the standard for the desktop business computer. Networks are made up of client and server computers. Client computers are used by network users to gain access to the network.

It also covers the basics of peer-to-peer and server-based networks. It includes information on networking hardware and also provides you with information on the different protocol stacks that are used on networked computers. The different media for building the network infrastructure, such as Ethernet and IBM Token-Ring, are also discussed. Part II, "Getting the Network Up and Running," covers the configuration aspect of peer-to-peer networks and also provides an overview of working with network operating systems.

Server-based networks also provide you with greater centralized control of resources and make it easier to add additional computers, users, and resources (again, when compared to peer-to-peer networks). Server-based networks are scalable networks, meaning they are easily expandable. One requirement for a server-based network is a computer running a network operating system; this computer is known as the server. As already mentioned in Chapter 1, "Computer Networking Overview," a server computer is basically a special-purpose machine that logs in users and "serves" up resources, such as files and printers, to the users.
