If each work station required the same amount of time, then each worker would pass the work along to the next station at the same time, and there would be no idle time in the system. Of course, such an ideal is impossible in the real world and maybe even undesirable; some idle time is usually necessary as a buffer for variable task times. If one work station takes longer than the others, all the others will have to slow down to the speed of that one. Otherwise, work from the previous work station would pile up.
We keep adding departments in this manner, trying to keep departments next to each other if they have large travel costs between them. 2. Cost figures are shown for each route. Those routes that are more than one step apart are listed. The initial solution gets us off to a pretty good start, although it is unlikely to be optimal. We see that there are only four pairs of departments that have some traffic between them and that are not next to each other. 2 Job Shop Layout those trips that are more than one step apart.
By using robots we are able to make production changes through software rather than by continually setting up the machines in different ways. Of course, the robots we are talking about don’t much resemble those in science fiction movies. Most consist largely of mechanical arms with many joints to make a wide range of motions. Modern robots are being built with increasingly sophisticated senses of touch and even sight in order to perform more accurately. Flexible manufacturing systems can provide a great savings in labor cost, and the machines can produce more consistent output than human systems.
