This booklet is the 1st to use a severe method of weather swap technological know-how and coverage strategies within the South Pacific sector. It argues that the ways that islands and their population are represented in weather technological know-how and politics seldom ends up in significant responses to help them to evolve to weather switch. all through, the authors specialize in the hitherto mostly overlooked social affects of weather switch, and show that version and mitigation guidelines can't be potent with out realizing the social structures and values of island societies.

In addition, tropical cyclones which are typically generated in the western Pacific become more common in the central part of the region during El Niño events. The region is also exposed to a number of biological hazards, which may be affected by climate. Foremost among these are vector-borne diseases such as malaria and dengue fever. Malaria is endemic in Vanuatu, the Solomon Islands and Papua New Guinea, while episodes of dengue fever are experienced periodically in most parts of the region. Incidences of ciguatera fish poisoning, caused by biomagnification of marine toxins in reef fish, increase during periods of higher sea-surface temperatures (Hales et al, 1999).

A series of islands may be formed over the one hotspot. As oceanic plate movement takes them away from the hotspot, subsidence and processes of erosion cause them to diminish in elevation and area. Typically, oceanic island arcs are formed, with the islands furthest from the hotspot being the lowest and smallest. An example of such a chain is the Hawaiian islands. To the east, situated above the hotspot is the ‘big island’ of Hawaii where volcanic action is continuing to create new land. As one moves along the Hawaiian island chain the islands become older, smaller and lower.

In times of hardship these links could be called upon for assistance (Campbell, 2006). In several PICs, the susceptibility of houses to wind damage during tropical cyclones was reduced by settlement patterns which avoided cyclone-prone coastal areas, and methods of housing construction which were able to resist storm damage, or when damaged could be relatively easily rebuilt. Whatever the theoretical position one might take, a great many Pacific Island communities appear to have been thriving at the time when Europeans first intruded into the island realm, where they found lively populations and described the environments as gardens of Eden (Withers, 1999).
