Obviously, if you or I begin designing a microcontroller platform as a challenger to Arduino with similar specs, we would not succeed. The market share that Arduino already possesses is substantial. Why? Arduino has been around for a very long time in Internet years. There is an established user base, name recognition, and whole slew of compatible third-party accessories. The price point is low. There is brick-and-mortar representation at RadioShack, Micro Center, and Fry’s. Everybody who is a Maker or electronics enthusiast knows of it.

I now know that I truly love technology for the joy of discovery that it brings. I do not aspire to move ever higher in a company’s management ranks, because that would just move me further from real technology. I’ve learned courage to try new things (and fail), and to be more comfortable in the spotlight despite being an introvert. I’ve learned to be thick-skinned to negative feedback and resilient to unexpected problems. I’ve also recognized that most surprises are actually positive, not negative.

I make it a personal challenge to figure something out and exhaust all possibilities. I play a game with myself to go into a situation and figure it all out, there and then, with any resources available. About 15 years ago, I was on a job installing shelves. I first thought the wall was Sheetrock, but I was wrong: the wall was brick. Without the proper screws, I thought I would have to return to install another day. However, I then had a brainstorm: why not drill the holes in the brick and hammer a piece of my wood pencil into the hole, and this gave me a spot to screw in a typical wood screw.
